Spa Review: Arama Beauty Studio: Cellulite Treatment, Facial, Organic Rose Manicure & Lemongrass Green Tea Pedicure

Now I know I’ve written a few spa reviews in the last few months, but today I want to tell you about a spa that has an interesting and unique selling point. Arama Beauty, located in Muthaiga Mini Market, tucked away in a tiny little corner (next to Danielle’s) is a gem of a place. This isn’t a fancy spa where you feel like you have to take off your shoes the moment you step in for fear of introducing a speck of dust. It’s not big either, the entire spa itself probably wouldn’t fill a football field. The rooms are small, but cosy – and there are only 2 pedicure stations occupying the main area (they are quite large though!). So let’s forget about size and décor… Arama’s USP is the fact that all the products they use are completely natural and organic, totally preservative and paraben free and some are even home made! A big draw in this day and age when more and more people are worried about the chemicals they apply to their skin. As Bansi, the founder of Arama told me: “You shouldn’t put on your skin, what you wouldn’t put in your mouth!”.

Arama offers an all natural cellulite treatment, using a home made coffee scrub and coffee, orange and cinnamon oils from their exclusive brand supplier, Healing Earth. Healing Earth products are made using pure organic botanicals and indigenous plant extracts. The first part of the cellulite treatment is the coffee scrub. The owner makes the scrub herself using coffee granules as the exfoliator – they’re rubbed vigorously on to your skin to remove the dead skin and to stimulate the fat to break down. You then have a quick shower and immediately get on to your 1 hour long massage. The caffeine in the coffee oil helps to tighten up your skin, the orange oil is a diuretic and is great at relieving fluid buildup and the cinnamon oil stimulates circulation to help the body eliminate toxins that cause cellulite. Along with diet and exercise, it should take about 5 sessions for you to start seeing a difference in your cellulite, and it only costs 6,000 KES per session.

Another treatment I had the pleasure to try was Arama’s facial. A standard facial with nothing fancy added on (they do have some fancy ones that I’d like to try), all the products used come from Healing Earths Pinotage range focusing on their famous anti-oxidant rich Pinotage Oil. The cleanser tingles as it is applied, stripping the dirt and makeup from your skin. The exfoliant, containing walnut shell powder gently removes the dead skin after which comes the steaming and the extraction (quick and relatively painless). Once extraction is done, a serum containing Marula (rich in fatty acids to deeply hydrate) and Neroli (cicatrisant to help remove dark marks) oils was massaged into my face (Neroli and Rose is used for oily skin) after which a clay mask was applied to hydrate and repair. Finally a soothing toner was sprayed over my face to calm the skin down after the treatment and moisturizer applied. Every single product is 100% organic and rich in anti-oxidants, which as we all know help with anti-aging and inhibit further damage.

My final treat at Arama was a manicure and pedicure. We all know how manicures and pedicures go by now, but here everything is completely organic! The manicure uses geranium oil which has emollients to moisturize and enhance the skin, along with a gorgeous rose spa bomb containing baking soda, baking powder, almond essential oil and cornstarch to make your skin softer. After the manicure, rose shea butter cream is massaged into your hands which smells divine! For the pedicure, they use lemongrass oil which is both antiseptic and an astringent. They also use a peppermint mask to cool and hydrate your feet (which feels AMAZING) and peach apricot cream which I could probably eat.
